  Little Learners

The Little Learners Program is geared toward social interaction, daily routines and structure, and expansion of speech and language. Children are challenged physically and verbally with sophisticated projects. Classroom experiences will be used to increase imagination and creativity within major subject areas such as language, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, drama, and dance.

The children will begin refining their motor skills and spending more time on cognitive, language, and social emotional development. Their vocabulary will enhance and conversational speech will be challenged. Little Learners also are taught to express their emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, love, and happiness using their words. They will strive to be more independent with daily routines and self awareness.

All experiences are balanced between teacher directed and child directed activities with a harmonious balance between passive and active activities. In addition the Little Learners will begin the early stages of writing along with an introduction to simple homework assignments. Homework is designed to bring child and parent together to discuss and explore what the child has been learning throughout their day. It is never looked at for accuracy or neatness. It is used purely as a learning enhancing tool to bring parents and children together for some quality time after a day of separation from each other.

Little Learners also engage in Reading Response Journals that allow the children to respond artistically and verbally to children’s literature. After the children are read a story they are given an open ended question to respond to in their journals. They are asked to draw a picture and then their verbal response is recorded using the Language Experience Approach in the journal touching upon the Balanced Literacy Curriculum. This opportunity allows the children to expand their thinking and reasoning skills along with their comprehension skills.

In addition to Reading Response Journals, mathematics is introduced in their Math Journals. This simple math is another strategy for number and shape recognition with the beginning stages of counting and writing numbers.
